Cranleigh Medical practice supports the training of future doctors and we are delighted to have a selection of doctors working with us at different stages in their careers.

Dr Mayer is currently our training director who co-ordinates support for our trainees from all of the team. Dr Clark, Dr Blakemore and Dr Pham all supervise trainees.

Currently we do not supervise medical students. All our trainees are qualified doctors.

Once qualified as a doctor it takes a minimum of a further five years to qualify as a general practitioner. During this time trainees spend time working in various hospital departments and in general practice. Trainees have to reach a level of competence based on ongoing assessments throughout this training. This means that as a patient you can expect a high quality, well trained general practitioner to look after you.

We have both foundation and specialist trainees with us. The foundation years doctors come out for a four month placement after one year of working in the hospital. The specialist trainees, also known as GP registrars are more experienced doctors. They are the future GPs.

You may find that if you are seeing a doctor in training, he or she may pop out to discuss your case with their trainer which might take a few minutes. Don’t worry! This is normal practice and helps to ensure you are given the best care. Sometimes the doctor is seeking clarification on management, sometimes they are seeking a second opinion or wanting to talk to the doctor that knows you best if your case is complex.

Use of Video

These doctors may video surgeries and also may ask for patient questionnaires to be filled in about them, so that their trainers can ensure that they are competent to practice. You may be asked to participate in this with written consent. In video surgeries, it is only the talking element of the consultation that is recorded, not the examination. If you decide not to take part in a video surgery, we fully respect your decision and would like to reassure you this will not adversely affect any care that you receive from our team.

Other Trainee Clinicians

We were lucky to be one of the first practices locally to employ a full time paramedic practitioner. We continue to support paramedics in training for this role.

We also have physician associates (PAs) and nursing students who remain under full supervision of senior colleagues.
